Have you memorized any Bible verses?

I can remember memorizing single verses and even chapters of the Bible years ago when I was in school. Even though I didn't keep up with the review part of it, I still treasure the precious opportunity I had to memorize Scripture when I was younger. These passages still have an impact on me today.

Did you memorize any when you were a child?
Would you say it was worth the time and effort spent memorizing?

In his second letter to Timothy, the Apostle Paul wrote,

"And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (3:15).

Timothy's teaching in the Word of God began when he was a child, and Paul exhorted him to continue in the things he had learned. It is so important that we are familiar with the Scriptures. What better time is there to learn God's words than early in life?

Thy Word Creations offers some wonderful resources in getting started with Bible memory. They sell recordings of chapter-length songs with accompanying books that make Bible memory almost effortless for children, teens, and adults.

They have some albums with children's voices. Children love to listen to the music and follow along in the illustrated book that accompanies the recording. You can even listen to free music samples online before you buy. Check them out at http://www.rtol.net/jonathanmeyer/thyword/.

I'd say memorizing definitely does play a part in our relationship with God. I do try to memorize, and I can, however I actually find that the verses that come to me in time of need are really not ones that I especially tried to memorize. Just ones I had stored in my heart somehow. Smile Meditation on the Word is one thing that... well if I say, it simply draws us closer to the Lord just as the scriptures say.

Sincerely,
David Boskovic

Dear Interneoforums,

Good evening!

Thank you for your post and welcome to PursuingLife.com! I really appreciate your reference to www.sosministries.org. The book May McClure wrote is a very encouraging and inspiring book. I just downloaded it and started reading it. I have not been memorizing Scripture recently but I'm hoping this book will help me find time and strength to continue memorizing Scripture!

Have a good evening!

I've started recently, and have memorized Ephesians 3:14-21 so far. I want to get the entire book down, but I'd love to find a comprehensive plan somewhere that would allow you to memorize long passages at a time, and also provide a broad overview of the Bible.

I don't like memorizing one verse out of its context; I think that there's so much more meaning when you take several at a time. Unfortunately, most memorization plans seem to group single verses under different topics, leaving you with a lot of lovely, but totally out of context verses.

Anyone run across a plan that focuses on longer passages? (I usually take two verses at a time, but I work my way through a passage, I don't memorize entire passages in one go!)

I remember memorizing 1 when I was young. We did not stress it in our home school program but now today I wonder what I would know if I had that. I have never forgotten that one that I memorized. Now I am going full time into memory and mind strengthening excersises. A great way to strengthen the brain overall is www.lumosity.com.
